MealKits & Capital One

This post was inspired by TheDailyChurn podcast where he talked about the value he got out of new user promos and promos through the Capital One Shopping portal (accessible tousers with Capital One credit cards but YMMV). One thing I wish he would have was break down the cost of each service after the promos so here I will do just that!

Breakdown of cost of all MealKits

HomeChef is definitely the outlier in price, being over three times more expensive per meal than the other options but I wanted to give it a try anyway.

The second HelloFresh entry was a free box gift from a friend. This does not stack with anything else but was $95 off so I went for it

Breakdown

Method

Signing up for these is really simple. First, you need to click through to the service using the Capital One Shopping portal. You can see all of the offers you have there

Example of GreenChef offer

In order to get these great deals, you need to be a new member. If you have already used the service, all you need to do is sign up using a new email address (if you are using Gmail, simply adding a period in your address will act as a new email for the service but will stills end the mail to you.

Keep in mind that these new customer offers only make the first meal worth it so once it ships you can deactivate your plan or close the account. It seemed easy enough to do by looking in the portals, you just have to remember to do it

Shipping Dates

I signed up for all of them at the same time and ran into the issue of not being able to change the date of the first shipment to far out enough so I don’t overlap with the other services I signed up for. A quick chat with support can have them move them out for you but you can only go so far. I plan on chatting them up again in about a month to reorganize one of the shipments to avoid overlapping

I have not received any of them yet (they start next week) but I think this was well worth it already. I got 31 meals for ~$130 total or $4.21/meal on average. Now I just have to wait and hope that the Capital One portal properly tracked my purchases

Food for Thought

I personally am against these services. They tout how much wasted food you save but you can avoid that by eating leftovers/proper purchasing at the grocery store. Something you can’t avoid with these services is the waste. Everything comes in individually packages, pre-portioned containers and some of them are not recyclable. I hesitated doing this because of this but decided to give them a try. Some of them have recycling initiative where they are making the packages more recyclable/eco friendly but it’s still not ideal. I am ok with it for one time, but will not become a member once the first promo offer is over
