- CFPB Updates
- They took action against Chime for not refunding customers in a timely manner after closing their accounts.
- “Chime’s customers had to wait weeks or months for access to their own money and were forced to use alternative funds to cover their essential expenses. Fast-growing financial firms must treat their customers fairly and understand that federal law is not a suggestion.”
- The CFPB’s order requires Chime to provide at least $1.3 million in redress to consumers it harmed, and pay a $3.25 million penalty into the CFPB’s victims relief fund.
- CFPB is held a public hearing today at 10am EST Airline and Credit Card Rewards Programs (I watched it so you don’t have to). Highlights:
- Allegiant Air Scott basically read as an ad for their BofA co branded CC
- 30-80% of Airline revenues come from CC revenue for airlines
- “Airlines cannot afford the rewards they are awarding”
- “Operating costs exceed passenger seat value at all airlines except Delta. Airlines make their money off of credit cards” Flight Attendant spokesperson
- Some flight attends make $10k-$15k annually for advertising and getting CC sign ups
- Many references to 4 large airlines and banks, none wanted to speak publicly
- “88% of our rewards customers revolve” Apple Credit Union CEO
- Lots of references to AA’s changes for earning miles
- Public comment quoted 7-10% interchange fees on EV charging
- CFPB Report Highlights Consumer Frustrations with Credit Card Rewards Programs
- “Credit card companies promise upfront benefits for signing up and using their rewards card, but often bury complex terms in the fine print for using the rewards. The CFPB will be looking for ways to protect people’s points, stop bait-and-switch scams, and promote a fair and competitive market for credit card rewards.”
- Credit card issuers impose vague or hidden conditions that keep consumers from receiving rewards:
- Companies devalue rewards
- Consumers encounter redemption issues with earned benefits
- Companies revoke previously earned rewards
- Federal consumer protection laws apply to rewards programs offered in connection with consumer financial products or services. The CFPB has taken action against credit card issuers such as American Express and Bank of America for engaging in unfair, deceptive, or abusive acts or practices related to rewards programs. CFPB will continue to monitor credit card rewards programs and will take necessary action on these issues as appropriate.
